Apple, Please Open up the iPod API!

iPod Picture

The iPod is cool, but it could be even cooler.

I'd like to develop software for the iPod, but I can't. No iPod Developer API has been publicly released, nor have I seen any indication that it will be released. I'm one of thousands of developers who were excited about the form factor and potential for the device and purchased one, hoping I could eventually develop a game or application for it. The 5-10 gig capacity and Firewire interface puts it in seperate category than other devices on the market. The full potential of the iPod has yet to be realized.

There are many possibilities for new software - either created by Apple or independent 3rd party developers.

iPod Potential

I would like to see games like Asteroids, Snake, and Mine Sweeper or a new game that hasn't even been thought of yet. I'm bored with breakout :(

I would like a feature enabling me to change the pitch and speed of the playback. This feature alone would have DJs snapping up iPods faster than Apple could make them.

I would enjoy playing with audio effects like reverb, echo, flanger, and chorus.

I would like the ability to browse non-mp3 files that I have stored on the iPod. The vCard contacts were a major step in the right direction, but I'd prefer the ability to browse any plain text (or html) file I have stored on my iPod. I'd also put both my contacts and Music into nested folders that I can browse in a hierarchy.

If you would also like to see Apple open up the iPod API to 3rd party developers, please add a comment below. What ideas do you have to realize the full potential of the iPod? Let us know below.

Comments

What would you like to see on your iPod? 06/26/02

Please post your ideas below. Thanks for your input!

The possibilities are endless 06/26/02
Jason Gilbert
jasonqg -at- sigkill.com
http://www.sonic.net/~jasonqg/

There are so many things I want to see, but more than anything, I want to see the things that I haven't even thought of. There's a world of limitless imagination waiting to be tapped.

I also would want to play around with a developer API myself, being a computer science undergrad, but I'm a Windows user, so I don't know how possible such a thing would be.

ipod api 06/26/02
TENKAI

oh man would i like to have games / email/ appointments/ notes/ news/ screensavers/ aac/ ogg/ anythingelseyoucanthinkof on my ipod!

Firewire Mic 06/26/02
James Murray
http://www.ipodhacks.com

I'm transferring to UCLA this summer and I think that a Firewire Microphone plugin at the top of the iPod would be great for college students like me who need to record lectures.

It wouldn't need to be a MP3 file recording (or compress into MP3 on the fly) because you could always transfer the AIFF file to your mac, let it encode it to MP3 , and then put it back on the iPod.

The next iPod 06/26/02
Doc Tagle

What I want on the next iPod is a color screen larger than the current one and software that would allow me to synch iPhoto with it as easily as iTunes does.

The next iPod:
My Photos
My Contacts
My Tunes

The center of My Digital Life

iPod additions 06/26/02
Stephen Downs

Here's my list of "must adds" for the iPod, top priorities listed first:

) Sound input! I want to record stuff on the fly. CD-quality AIFF will do nicely, mp3 encoding on the fly would be a nice addition (like Archos does).

) Ability for queue play (selecting songs won't immediately play them, just adds them to the presently playing queue).

) Ability to delete songs. Many times I don't want to hear a song again and I don't want to have to write it down, connect to a computer, and manually delete the song using iTunes.

) Pitch control!

) Effects! (although I wonder what you can manage)

) Tempo detection (a little app where you could tap the center button to calculate tempo would do the trick).

APPLE's policies 06/26/02
alfred

Having been a loyal Apple/Mac user for some time now...I have seen as others how apple has missed their opportunity to open up their architecture to others to program and market. Please don't repeat this mistake.

I would like to see a better interface between the iPOD and my car stereo!!

I ditto it all. 06/26/02
Alex
alexw -at- digitalcrowd.com

(1) Apple probually never will do this.

(2) Apple would be in a hard spot if they did... they would get copycats.

(3) I'd love to have it though. I'd LOVE to see some cool new apps for the iPod that run on the iPod

iPod as Digital Film 06/26/02
michael

With a FireWire to USB adaptor, and some additional programming, I could travel with my digital camera for months without having to download to my laptop. Most cameras can hold only a couple dozen photos.

Yes 06/27/02
James

Would be wicked, mate!

Yup 06/27/02
David

Apple should release the api, but they won't. Any current tinkering (breakout level editor etc.) invalidates warranty. They won't let any old shmo hook into the pod's OS.

Anyway they're bound to release a handheld soon (InkWell anyone?) which, unless it only has mono sound, makes me wonder what we're going to do.

pleeease... 06/27/02
marco zamponi
tzippy -at- web.de

an application to transfer files between 2 ipods would be cool...

pliiiiizzz 06/27/02

I'm a developer and i so want to develop on ipod that i tried to "hack" it but wihtout info it s really hard. Please apple open the api!!!!

OO user design 06/27/02
jb

what i'd love to see is an object oriented user-design package. Wanna be able to sort by genre? just drag and drop it into an "iPod interface manager". Or by time, or by whatever...

Would love an open API 06/27/02
Craig

Come on Apple, surprise us all and open the API!

digital sound output options 06/27/02
blanco
http://jumpserve.com/blanco/

Any kind of digital input or output through the port would be great. The nomad allows uncompressed recording to its internal HD. Something like this for the 'pod would excellent for band rehearsels.
I'd be great to take an iPod (firewire I/O) and a set of iSticks (USB) to a party and leave the thing running untouched in the corner for a few hours (in lieu of bringing a powerbook).

Graphical sound visualizer 06/28/02
Adriaan Mol
adriaan -at- mollie.ml

Graphical sound visualizer would be cool.

wasting power!! 06/28/02
jimi

there is twice the gameboy advance power in the ipod, and its only to play mp3 !!??

we could just develop a OGG player for the best audio, some games and PDA utilities.. well.. so much things to do, and its impossible because of narrow minded capitalistic compagnies

open mind
open source

my thoughts 06/28/02
Darrel

I'm with Michael...I'd LOVE to be able to hook up my Canon to the iPod to offload digital images while on vacation.

In fact, the CompUSA 'helper' actually told my wife that she could when she bought the iPod for me. So even a lowly CompUSA kid sees value in that.

Other than that, I, too, would love a clock/calendar. I'd also like OGG file support.

Hardware wise, I'd like to see an am/fm tuner, a bigger screen.

And a Mac PDA...

Open the API or create this applications!!!!! 06/28/02
hoyab

That would be awesome...

Changing the pitch and speed of the music would be cool, as would being able to transfer files between iPods.

I would also like date/time/calendar and text/html viewing.

Share your feedback with Apple 06/28/02
Duane

It is all good and fine to engage in a group hug about our desire for Apple to open up the API, but they probably aren't reading this page. If you feel strongly, give Apple some feedback about it:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/

I've left feedback for them suggesting ogg support, but there are some very creative ideas posted here. Tell 'em!

I love all my apple products. Especially win showing them off to windows users. I use my iPod on DJ gigs,in my car and jogging. 1)I would love to be able to hook it up to my Canon digital camcorder and transfer digital photos and/or video.2) I would like to record on the fly with a mic or a/v inputs. It would be nice to record my daughter making cute sounds or mixes straight from my mixer.3) I would really to use iPhoto on my iPod and be able to hook up directly to a printer or play slide shows with digital photos.

all of this and more...
ipod is great but it would be very great if Apple uses synenergy - effects with 3rd party developers.

iPod recording 07/31/02
Vincent Chambers
chambers_vincent -at- hotmail.com

I'd simply like to use the iPod to replace my portable cassette recorder and minidisc player. I record my voice lessons, coachings, and performances for study and analysis and would like to collect everthing on the iPod without having to covert to MP3 on my PC, then transfer files to my Mac.

Ogg on Ipod 08/02/02
mike

I'd love to have an iPod that could play ogg files. An open API could be a great way to do that...

Ditto 08/02/02
Nelson

I would like to be able to see pictures, even though they would be in black and white on the screen. Particularly if I could add them to the contacts (has somebody been able to to this yet?)

I would love to see those things happen.

I think we all share similar ideas the the iPod, I just received one and I am having fun showing it off, now if they could only make a coil cord for the ear phones.

Recording... 08/19/02
Tyler Gingrich

If I could record music at various jam sessions into an iPod, I'd buy one in an instant.

Basically I want to replace a tape recorder.

:-) If wishing would only make it so...

Tetris for ipod` 08/27/02
Jeremy

Tetris would be the perfect game for ipod using the back and forward buttons for lateral movement and the center button to turn the game pieces in one direction. This would make the ipod addictive.

Space Invaders 08/28/02
Harry SMith

Amoungst Tetris what about the classic Space Invaders, one of the best games ever to be released.

I'm not a developer, but would it be possible to write something in C+, or whatever, and send it to Apple, so that they can finish it off, and publish it?

Musicians and the iPod 08/29/02
Richard

I'm dangerously close to buying a new Minidisc player because I want to be able to record gigs from an audio line in and or Mic.

I can see I'm not the only one who wishes that the iPod could do this...

If peripherals is what helped the PC best Apple in the 80s, then why not learn your lesson already-- 20 years later! Open the ports! USB stands for Universal! Make it so.

(Instead of putting forth money on ipod, I now have to go buy a cheesy memory card for my camera.)

archos will kill pod 09/02/02
el payaso
elbobo -at- elbobo.com
http://www.archos.com/us/products/product_jbmm.html

If Apple either a) doesn't open the API or at least b) adds these features, then they will lose to Archos. I am almost regretting my purchase of the 20 gig because the new archos, for $100 less (sales tax at my local apple store) will do everything we want:
record mp3's or uncompressed audio (from an audio source or a built-in mic)

play (low quality) divx movies on it's color lcd or hooked up to a tv

display photos on it's color lcd, and save photos from it's memory card adapter (which is selling NOW)

and finally record video in mpeg4 with an adapter or a camera module.

this product will kill the ipod if apple doesn't catch up. the firewire port could accomodate all of these features except displaying color photos and playing on the lcd (which isn't a big deal to me).

Apple made this mistake against IBM and I hope they don't do it again. At least add these features if you don't want to open up the ipod.

I provided the url for the Archos product.

iPod on Linux 09/07/02
Craig Johnson

I use Linux at home and at work. I have a 10gb ipod because tex9.com was able to get my mp3s onto the ipod!

Apple, you make a great product but please open up and smell the source!

iPod 09/11/02
Macbrush

iCal is a nice recent addition, but I won't jump on the wargan unless I see things I really want appeared on iPod. I've been a proud owner of Newton 2100 with almost all original accessaries.... well... for a few months anyway (thanks to Apple), so I am no longer such a loyal customer as I used to be. Now I keep my options, and won't take any promises, and "possibilities".

I love the look and feel of iPod, but unless iPod is capable of playing more music formats, especially ogg Vorbis, and rm, Monkey would be a nice addition; and also more features to take adavantage of the firewire and gigabyte size hard disk, such as iPod/iPod file trasnfer, recording, storage for other devices like DC. But what I really want right now, is ogg capability, without that, I definitely won't get one.

Now, multiplatform owner
Past, a loyal Apple user

ARCHOS KILL THE iPod???? 09/18/02
Bill Graf
bgraf5850 -at- hotmail.com

I have no idea what you talking about. The iPod is THE best out there. I had an archos jukebox (20gb model), and , pardon my french, the thing was a piece of shit! It skipped, yes I said skipped, all the time with its 2mb buffer. It took about 15 seconds to load a song. It was loud. It was big and heavy. Plus, the friggin thing could be used as a vibrator it vibrated so much. If it is any indication at what the rest of the Archos products are like, by getting the multimedia -player, your pretty much throwing you money down the trash. I'm just lucky my Archos broke and I had the special BestBuy warranty so i could go get my new best friend, the one and only iPod. (P.S., I'm never going to buy another Archos product for as long as I live. THATS how bad their stuff is.)

OGG 10/02/02
Cody Casterline
cody c at darwin dot no dash ip dot com

I was just thinking to myself that I'd buy an iPod if it supported OGG playback. But if Apple opened the API, I'd buy one today, without OGG support, because I'm sure someone else out there would be working on OGG support ASAP. (Maybe even the ogg team itself.)

Plus, I've found that I no longer use my PDA. (I bought a laptop, and PDAs are too awkward for data input.) But if I could have something like a read-only address book, calendar, shopping list, etc. in my iPod that could sync with my computer, I'd be all set!

It's the uses we (and Apple) haven't thought of yet that make opening the API a good idea.

Lets Utilize this Firewire Port!! 12/09/02
Scott Erdman
Erdie17 -at- hotmail.com

The iPod has a firewire port (!!!) This opens up millions of possibilies! I'm thinking (and so are a lot of us..) Camera memory backup, An organizer, and a firewire keyboard for data entry. Software wise, I'd like some way using a password to be able to delete songs off of my ipod. Also to see a list of whats on my iPod other than music would be nice...And having two computers at home and work is hell right now. I have to transfer the music files themselves because itunes wont let you drag music off of your ipod. Its not preventing the transportation of music, its just making it difficult...Please! allow free-transportation!

Please add recording 12/26/02
Jonny

Hello - I was given an iPod - 20 GB model... and somehow have managed *not* to open it... returning it tomorrow. Why? because it does not support recording. I'm going to wait for this, and settle with my tape recorder until this is added. MiniDisc could've had me in a sec, except that Net MDs don't support uploading of recorded audio (how silly is this Sony?)...

Anyway, enjoy your iPods... i kinda wish I kept mine, but for the money, I'll have to wait.

I love you still.

Visualisations would be lovely, as would many of the other goodies mentioned here - but then, the Ipod is NOT a PDA - if you want a PDA go buy one, Ipod plays MP3s, and it's the best mp3 player out there - it's simple, and it works - It's a joy compared to all the other (wintel/pocket PC) gadgetry I've come across.

Why not? 12/30/02
Max

Why won't apple add recording to it's next gen ipod?

Personally I feel that the market for this device would double, no TRIPLE if HIGH quality recording were added along with mic & line inputs.
There are NO recording devices that have the speed(xfer), Mac compatibility, or quality, and the fact that nobody has corrected this must be either stupidity or denial. GET ON THE BALL GUYS!

love is a small withe thing 12/31/02
tk274
atariphunk -at- hotmail.com

Definitely my 20gigs iPod is one of my favourite piece of equipment.. I'm an audio engineer and music producer, I have tons of cds..recently I understood that I was not listening so much music anymore (wich is quite important in my job), now with iPod i can listen to all my music...
what I'd like to see on it?

autocrossfade mix during playback

sincerely..mobile phone games are quite unusefull and boring, now there is a calendar, a clock with date and appointment..
I do not believe that apple will ever transform this machine in a standalone audio recording device, and sincerely I do not see the point of such thing, since the quality of AD converter in a such small device, can't be enough good to be usefull. at least it could be the same AD conv. of powerbooks..definitely not very usefull thing...

could be fun to have a firewire controller that converts this tiny jewel in a sampler to go...

but let's keep feet on earth...

anyway, thanks apple for this wonder.

I also am a professinal DJ/audio enginier.I travel allover the world and would like to record my sets(i currently take my Tibook).
I need Audio inputs.I understand the thing is probably to small to do this but....ITS FIREWIRE!!! c'mon Apple make a device that plugs in the firewire port.A box that has professinal inputs not some crappy mini headphone jacks. Its a hard disc recorder!!
I know Archos makes one.but like the other posting said "Archos is a piece of shit"I also had an Archos product and it broke.I would also like to see an XM attachment

Would love to be able to develop for my white & si 02/22/03
Mmaster

I love my iPod. Though, being able to create a playlist without connecting it to my computer would be a great thing, because when you are on a trip, for example, you can want a new playlist with some songs of various artists. I've got it all figured out, just waiting for Apple to open it up ;_; At the price it is, why must satisfied iPod-owners wait for Apple themselves to come up with all the stuff we want? The iPod has almost endless possibilities. Just, as mentioned, a firewire keyboard would open up a whole new market!

Ogg Vorbis Support 03/10/03
chrish

The one thing that is truly laking in the iPod is Ogg Vorbis support -- I have only a small portion of my music in Ogg Vorbis support, but I now only encode in Ogg, and lots of my favorite stuff is in Ogg. Accordingly, Ogg support is very important to me personally -- and, since Ogg has several advantages over mp3 (see www.xiph.org), I think that Ogg support would be a major benefit to the digitla music community at large. Bug Apple for it, hack it yourself, but I think that this one improvement would be great.

Steve Jobs

http://www.apple.com/

As president and CEO of Apple Computer, I just wanted to officially let you annoying obnoxious looser know that I really don't care what you want. Unlike the responsive customer driven business models of the Japanese, I want to assure you that you'll get only what I think you need and nothing more. Let's face it, I've succeeded in swindling $400 from each of you who bought an iPod, because everyone knows, that in another 2 years, the rest of the industry will have equal if not superior products, with all the features you want and more... at a fraction of the cost. So just shut the hell up and quit your whining and snivelling... if you people are so technically oriented... then why don't you just develop your own product to compete with mine. Apple is a huge corporation now, we don't work out of a garage anymore, and I guarantee that we'll use every trick in the book to derail you.

As a free lance dance teacher, i would very much like to use the Ipod, rather than carry around lots ovf CD's, however, for me it is essential that I can slow down the music being played, especially for the beginners.

PITCH CONTROL 04/24/03
Danny Rivera

THE PITCH CONTROL WOULD AWESOME ON THE IPod. Right now I'm having a hard time deciding between Ipod and Creative Nomad 3 the only reason I wouldn't go with Ipod is because there isn't a speed audio without changing pitch option like Nomad.

PITCH CONTROL!!!!!! 06/13/03
Ernest Acosta
jointski -at- iwon.com

Hey, if you guys know how to write/develop software, here is what might work for pitch control. Use an adapter on the headphone plug, do a analog to mp3 conversion, output to a control cable that dual cd players have. Use the dual cd player control section (where you speed up your cd or change tracks. The IPOD is used just as a source. This has been done before, but I am just speculating on how you might be able to get pitch control from an IPOD. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just wany a freaking Queue Play function from Apple for my Classic iPod 10gb! or the bare minal at least the "On the Go" playlist on the next window 1.2.7 updater. PLS!

Ok, the games on the iPod are good, but they miss still much, like the records. And they are few. Can't we make a petition to Apple?

Language Translation 09/30/03
Tim Erickson

The Ipod could be used as a translator. Software could be written to support an english into a foreign word cross list. MP3 files could be played for the correct pronounciation of a word or phrase. An audible speaker attachment would allow a hard to prounce word or phrase to be played native speaker. This would be reinforced by a text message of the word on the Ipod's screen and the word/phrase could be shown to locals by its traveling owner . Perhaps a moving map could someday be developed. The music side of the Ipod would enhance the Ipod's utility while traveling.

speed and pitch change 11/13/03

I have and ipod but have switched to an archos multimedia because they offer the ability to change tempo or pitch. I use mine to play square dance music and often need to change the speed so that older people can keep up. I had given up on apple till I was told this week that ipods could change speed. Alas I was misinformed. Hopefully they will come out with a ne idop even if it is a DJ pro.

"plain text (or html) file I have stored on my iPod" - You can! Check under the "notes". Apple needs to make 3 programs for programming. Something like BASIC, an OOP, and a very HL program. And now they've release the iPod, Photo, you got color and pics! Yay! NOW MAKE IT PROGRAMABLE! Imagine 5 gigs of GAMES!!!

Hi there,
Is there any way to access streaming digital audio, back through iPod's USB interface?

If not, I think that would be cool.

I agree that exposing the API for iPod would be great. Would like to see a granular scale of the available power. This would be great.

As someone else already said apple is not reading this page, so email

Alister
alister -at- phrostbyte.dhis.org

Why not jsut stick linux on it and grab podzilla then start writing your own apps in C :)

Not a perfect solution for some but others my like this more than the standard software that the iPod comes with :) I'm tempted but I know as soon as I've converted it some cool software will come out that I won;t be able to use anymore hehe

ipod has a wonderful structure to develop products for handicaped people. Voice synthetis, recognition, remote command; the basis is here. Autonomy and weight are appreciable. Just the lack of software opening is a problem.

iTrip must use API? 01/07/05
Simon

Manufacturers such as Griffen - maker of the iTrip mist have access to some kind of API as the iTrip inserts stuff in the menus.

I wanted an API for writing games (of course!) and to add a delete function which I think is the biggest omission.

neo gen ipod 04/20/05

i think the only way you can really make ipod popular is not by making games , no . i think they should make em play all sorts of videos , images , animations , audio files and be able to share them via bluetooth . another way is to add a radio fm and am , and an accessory to make it a sound recorder , for students like someone before me has mentioned . besides if they one like that with a wide colour screen that can be scratched then people will buy it . besides the way it looks it doesn't look suitable to have programs or applications .besides the batterie should be able to last for at least six hours i mean a lot of people traavel long distances .oh ya it would be cool to record sound clipd with a mic and send em via bluetooth , like an sms only u listen , not read . but it wont be a success if they do not give it a reasnable price cuz then no one will buy it this way there is no chance of a success.

I need a way to cnotrol pitch and tempo when playing tunes on an iPod. I am a DJ and currently use Winamp and Pacemaker but want to convert to iPod with the ability to control tempo and pitch.

Happy to pay say... $30 for a piece of software that would do this...

Ipod extras 05/28/05
Dave

This is more for the shuffle...

Take the battery out of the actual shuffle, therefore making it much smaller, and then adding the battery into the USB cap, then you can carry extra caps as extra batteries. Im sure this is managable because of the extra 5 contacts on the connector.

Another useful thing for the Ipod would be to transfer files between ipods, Ipod to Ipod. A kind of link up cable.

ipod uses PortalPlayer's SDK and FDK which is based on ARM's chipset. You could ask PortalPlayer for SDK to write apps using the API they provides.

Well - there are plenty of good, constructive comments, so I won't heap on mine. Maybe the folks at ipod know everything, so don't need to listen to anybody. Maybe the guys in the MAC dept think 5% share of market is OK.

the 2 essential things that need to be added, by games, I mean more, or an API for them, these would make iPods the ultimate music system.

my wishlist... 01/05/06
menonerd

apart from pitch control, reverse and the like (SO cool) i'd LOVE to have the following: a "listen to all from artist / album / playlist" shortcut when listening in shuffle mode. it'd be so convenient if you happen to stumble accross this certain album or artist you have totally forgotten you had in your vast collection.
oh and while we're at it: course i'd love to have my compilations grouped as they are in my itunes - totally sucks ipod doesnt do this by default...
so please, dear apple, give us (i.e. erik and all those other guys) the API!

So many reasons... 01/13/06
Zedd

As a software developer, I can't own a piece of hardware without thinking of features I'd like to see implemented in the interface alone. Such is the case with my iPod. The interface works, but it's not the most user-friendly, IMO.

As soon as I install a new OS, I immediately go to work customizing it to my liking -- not an option with the iPod interface.

Why force the public to rely on the creativity of the few project developers? Why not allow third-party creativity (and genious) to participate? I'm certain that opening the playing field would be a brilliant marketing move. The more options that exist, the broader the customer base. Apple doesn't have to spend the time and resources to develop those options.

Pitch Controll 02/14/06
m1n1

Just add pitch controll and I'll be happy

Why it will never happen 02/26/06
Aaron

The ONLY reason Apple has 80$ market share in the digital media market is the fact that iTumes is the only DRM enabled music store that works with the iPod, and ofcourse the iPod has the 80% market share. If Apple opend up the iPod API, then all of the other DRM enabled music stores (Yahoo, MSN, Napster etc) would be able to create an iPod plugin that allowed iPod users to listen to their DRM enabled music, thus iTimes looses A LOT of market share. So Apple won't do it.
The only hope is for someone to find a hack.

Tempo and pitch 10/06/07
Toni

I always listen to my music at 15% high tempo, so I won't buy an iPod until I can increase my music's speed. There are other MP3s in themarket that allow me to already do this, so I won't bother with the iPOD.

If it had that single feature I would buy it though.

Apple listens to customers! (eventually) 11/18/07
