Canon ZR10 Quick Review

I've had my Canon ZR10 camera for about a year and a half. It's a great little camera that is easy to take with you everywhere. The battery life is great. In most cases, the battery life exceeds the length of the tape. The footage it records is sharp and bright in normal lighting conditions. There is a low light mode that slows the frame rate down to get a brighter picture, but it produces a strobe effect and a grainy picture. The exposure is adjustable but does not adjust smoothly down below 60 FPS.

The LCD screen is small and bright. Bright sunlight will wash out the image forcing you to use the viewfinder. Unfortunately, you have to close the LCD screen to use the view finder, and the Menu button is below the LCD.* [Ed: note correction below.] You will need to use the menu if you want to do anything beyond adjusting the focus and exposure.

The main advantage of this camera is its small size. This camera is small enough to stash in a coat pocket completely undetected. I'm sure I would have left my camera home much more often if I chose a larger model.

Another nice feature this camera has is A/V recording. You can actually record straight off the TV, or from another analog camcorder to DV and then edit it on your computer.

Canon ZR10 Tip: If you are having trouble with the power saving mode turning your camera off while it is attached to your computer, simply remove the Mini DV tape.

"Unfortunately, you have to close the LCD screen to use the view finder, and the Menu button is below the LCD. "
not true - all you have to do is twist screen around so that it is viewable by the subject.

Thanx for the "take out the tape" tip.
