iPod Detailed Review
My iPod arrived on Monday Nov 12 while I was home from work eating lunch. Over my lunch break I had time to open up the box, charge the battery, and load it up with 3 gigs of music. The music transferred faster than I could decide which songs to put on it. The Firewire performance is great. Loading a similar amount of music over a USB interface would have taken hours. One CD takes about 10 seconds to transfer. I'm glad I passed up buying a USB player and waited for Firewire.
The iPod is the size of a Deck of cards and holds about 1000 MP3 songs at 160 kbs.
There are many ways to sync your iPod with iTunes. If you have a library of MP3s smaller than 4.6 gigs, you can choose to have iTunes sync all of you music, or if your library exceeds 4.6 gigs, you can choose to manually sync selected playlists. If that doesn't work for you, you can also manually drag one song at a time to your iPod. Once I loaded the music on to my iPod, it was easy to navigate through my collection with the thumb operated scroll wheel. Everyone that has tried my iPod has agreed that it is very easy to use, and most agreed that it was worth the price. The iPod also includes breakout. So far my high score is 733 bricks. It does get old after awhile. I'm hoping Apple releases the API so that more games are released. The wheel would be great for playing Asteroids... The iPod is not without it's flaws. The ear-bud style headphones that ship with the iPod are very uncomfortable in my ears. They do sound good, but I opted for a pair of more comfortable Sony headphones. The iPod is missing a graphical equalizer. I'm hoping a future firmware upgrade will offer this feature. Another problem I have noticed is that you can't adjust the volume while navigating the menus (because the wheel is also used to navigate) or while playing breakout. I would almost prefer a separate volume control at the top of the unit. It would make it easier to adjust the volume while it is in your pocket. Another problem is the shiny surface at the top is perfectly smooth all the way across. If the area above the screen where recessed slightly from the rest of the unit, it would prevent it from being scratched. The surface at the top has very sharp edges rather than being beveled. I would have preferred a beveled edge as it would be more comfortable to hold.

Battery at 2yr Mark

Erik Wrenholt erik -at- timestretch.com Battery life at 2-year mark: 6 hrs. 34 mins.
This was running continuously until it died, skipping songs I didn't want to listen to.
In sub-zero weather, pulling the ipod out of your pocket is enough to drain the battery. If you keep the battery warm, it will provide hours of music, even after two years of heavy use.
Hope this helps.

Jonp i own an archos JBM 120, which holds 20GB of music, or video or pistures which can be seen on the biult in colour screen. if this technology is around and at around the same price of a 20GB ipod why is the ipod so great, ok its small but so is the archos and the accesories are jst as good even better than the ipods. if i was you i'd reconsider getting an ipod and check out the archos JBM 120 cuz its way better than the ipod.

compare to Creative models

luke http://www.timestretch.com/site/ipod_detail_review/ I have a Creative Jukebox Zen. It's good n shiny, and (from reviews, and hearing friends' comparable players) has greater audio capabilities. What makes the iPod a better choice?
My model has USB2 capabilities, so speed of transfer isn't an issue, and the newer models of Zen are lighter than the iPod. My model carries 20GB of music, and has a library sync function similar to the iPod's. It also works well with Windows Media Player, which is my player of choice, as I use the WMA format.
Charges fast, and the battery lasts adequately.
The sleek anodised aluminium on this model is replaced by lighter weight and a bigger screen on the new ones, but I believe the original Zen is still available.
It doesn't have a picture/movie viewer like the Archos models, but it does offer superior sound to just about anything else.
Hope this helps in browsing for your new mp3!
